Bats are the single most regulated wildlife problem a Raleigh homeowner can have. In North Carolina it is illegal to trap, poison, or kill a bat, so the only lawful way to get a colony out of an attic, soffit, or chimney is exclusion: letting the animals leave on their own and making it impossible for them to get back in.
Our crews have been performing bat exclusions across Wake, Durham, Orange, and Johnston counties since 1990, and Raleigh Animal Removal is NWCOA Bat Standards Certified. That certification matters because a poorly timed or poorly sealed exclusion can trap flightless pups inside a wall, which is both inhumane and a guaranteed odor problem for the homeowner.
Most Triangle homes host big brown bats and evening bats, with the occasional little brown bat colony. They squeeze through gaps as small as three eighths of an inch, which is why the ridge line, gable vents, fascia gaps, and soffit to roof returns are the first places we inspect.
Signs You Need Bat Removal
- Chirping, scratching, or fluttering sounds in the attic or walls right after sunset
- Dark greasy staining around a gable vent, ridge line, or soffit gap
- Small pellets of guano on siding, window sills, decking, or attic insulation
- A strong ammonia smell in upstairs rooms during warm weather
- Bats circling the roof line at dusk or an individual bat inside the living space
Our Bat Removal Process
- 1
Free inspection
A full exterior and attic inspection to confirm the species, locate every active entry point, and measure the extent of guano contamination.
- 2
One way doors
We install one way exit devices over the active openings so bats can fly out to feed at night and cannot get back in.
- 3
Whole structure sealing
Every secondary gap is sealed with metal, mortar, or polyurethane before the doors come down, so the colony has nowhere to relocate.
- 4
Removal of the devices
After the colony has fully vacated, usually seven to fourteen days, we remove the one way doors and permanently close the last openings.
- 5
Cleanup and sanitizing
Guano removal, HEPA vacuuming, antimicrobial treatment, and insulation replacement where contamination warrants it.

North Carolina Legal Requirements
Maternity season restriction: May 1 through July 31 per 15A NCAC 10H .1503. No exclusion work is permitted during this period in order to protect nursing colonies. Trapping, poisoning, and killing bats is illegal in North Carolina year round.
Bat Removal FAQs
Can you just trap the bats?
No. North Carolina law prohibits trapping or killing bats. Exclusion is the only legal method, and it is also the only method that keeps the colony from coming back.
When can bat work be done?
The legal exclusion window is August 1 through April 30. From May 1 through July 31 pups are flightless and exclusion is prohibited under 15A NCAC 10H .1503. We can still inspect, quote, and schedule during maternity season.
How long does an exclusion take?
The install is usually one day. Bats need roughly one to two weeks to fully clear the structure, then we return to seal and clean.
Is bat guano actually dangerous?
Accumulated guano can support histoplasmosis spores and attracts bat mites and dermestid beetles. We treat any significant accumulation as a cleanup and sanitizing job, not just a removal job.
Do you offer a warranty?
Yes. Our exclusion work carries a limited lifetime warranty on the areas we seal.
